1. BMW 3 Series Saloon    Saloon car reviews

Pros - This is a great all round car. It is a solid drive with sharp responsive steering and poise through the corners. A good range of engines, excellent refinement and a quality feel on the inside. The 3 series is reliable to own and comes with plenty of safety kit. The legroom and boot are ample and the running costs are reasonable.

Cons - Quite expensive to buy, rear headroom could be better and the base level model doesn't come with air con.

2. Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon     Saloon car reviews

Pros - There is plenty of space inside the cabin and the boot and the variety of engines means there's something to suit everyone. They are all relatively quick as well and, with 7 airbags and stability control, come with an excellent level of safety kit. Resale values are high.

Cons - Some wind noise gets into the cabin and the interior doesn't have the quality feel it should have. Quite expensive to buy and although it comes with a reasonable level of kit, it's pricey to add the extras.

3. Audi A4 Saloon     Executive car reviews

Pros - The power from all engines is plentiful and the buying and running costs are copmpetitive. The ride is well balanced and holds corners well along with providing a good level of comfort. Safety and build quality are of a good standard as you would expect from Audi.

Cons - Not the sharpest looking car in it the compact executive class and some wind noise can be heard at high speed. The dashboard could be a bit less complicated

4. Jaguar X-Type Saloon     Executive car reviews

Pros - Overall drive is good and the 2.0 litre turbo diesel gives the best balance between performance and affordability. After some big discounts on new models there are some great bargains to be had. Ride is sturdy enough and the level of kit it comes with is good.

Cons - Resale value is low and the refinement is not as good as it's german rivals. The overall feel is a bit dated and lacks in boot space for its size

5. Lexus IS Saloon     Executive car reviews

Pros - The IS gives a good solid and punchy engine performance overall and corners well, particularly at speed. Equipment and safety levels are good as you'd expect from a Lexus as are the build quality and reliability. The top of the range petrol model give some blistering pace.

Cons - The gear ratio is too high on the diesel model which makes cruising in top gear feel laboured. The firm suspension makes city driving less comfortable and space at the rear and in the boot is limited.
