If you want to know what’s on at Derby Festé and when then look no further. We have listed all the performances in and around Derby city centre below for your convenience so you can plan your trip to the festival based on the events you want to see.
Many of the events are also suitable for kids at Derby Festé so you can enjoy some family entertainment together.
Friday 23rd September 7pm – 9pm
The Fire Garden - Bass’ Recreational Ground
The Fire Garden is a creation by Walk the Plank who have turned the recreation ground into a fantastic garden illuminated by various different fiery installations such as burning trees, glowing flowers and scorching shrubbery. Visitors to the Fire Garden can take a walk around at their leisure and enjoy not only the amazing pyrotechnic sights, but also a whole host of different performances within including the following:
Torch by Hooked Extreme Sports & Liquid – This collaboration between Deda’s youth performance company and Hooked Extreme Sports brings a performance of Urban dance and naked flames.
Giant Chimes by Nottingham City Arts – 3 Huge metal chimes breaking the horizon will be played to create a unique sound and background sound track to your Fire Garden walk. Festival goers will have the chance to play them too.
Flame Oz – Originating from Australia this act of contemporary circus performers will ignite your senses with a stunning display of fire based acrobatics
Fire Drawings – Collaborating with the pyrotechnic genius of Walk the Plank, a selection of Derby College students have created a set of drawings which will be created into sculptures of fire and set alight for a visually spectacular take on art.
Alfonso Milanos’ Mechanical Menagarie – A skeleton on a penny farthing pulls a mechanical cart of medieval, modern and Victorian marvels in a quirky display of smoke, fire, music and bubbles.
Sinfonia Viva – Members of this local based symphony orchestra provide the musical backdrop to the Fire Garden with a harmonious combination of bassoon, saxophone, percussion and trombone.
Community Lanterns by Surtal Art – As you look around the landscape of the Fire Garden you will notice, hanging from trees and bushes, the glowing presence of beautifully created lanterns that enhance the ambience of the Fire Garden experience.
Saturday 24th September 10am – 11pm
Peixos by Sarruga – 8pm – 9pm
Event Location – Derwent street marks the start of the parade that continues through the streets of Derby culminating in the grand finale at Cathedral Green.
For 2011 Derby Festé will enjoy the return of Sarruga, a Spanish street arts company who will be taking Derby city centre on a journey into the deep blue sea by transforming it into a vast sea bed complete with vivid sea creatures and giant illuminated fish.
The performance of sound, lights and vivid colours, called Peixos, will move in a procession around the city centre, via the Market Place and Iron Gate, culminating in a spectacular finale at Cathedral Green.
Family Entertainment
There is also a whole programme of events for all the family at Festé which will keep you and your kids entertained throughout the whole day. Things to do for children as well as adults at Derby Feste include:
The Big Scribble at QUAD – Add you graphical interpretation of the Festé highlights on the walls of QUAD’s café bar between 10am and 9pm.
SoundTrack Derby – The challenge is on to get out and around Derby and record sounds of the city on your phone that characterise it. Takes place between 11am and 5pm.
Family Craft Activities – Between 11am and 6pm anyone is welcome to pop into QUAD and join in the fun of making hats and masks under the guidance of local artists which can be worn during the Feste parade later in the evening.
Make a Fish workshop – The Silk Mill will be the venue for anyone to come and join the fun of making fish and helping create the ‘Deep Sea Creatures’ that will be paraded through the city after 8pm that evening. A café bar with refreshments is also available for those who do not wish to take part.
Surface Tension by First Movement – This hi tech digital audio and visual studio in the Market Place will be the place where people of all ages and abilities can come and get creative between 12pm and 6pm.
Artcore at Deda – Board games with a twist and arts and crafts will be the central theme to this activity open to all between 11am and 6pm.
Splash @ The Waterfall Stage – Located in The Market Place as well as in The Blacksmiths Yard on Sadler Gate, Splash is a platform that will see new and undiscovered performers from around Derby showcasing their acts in street theatre, dance, music and more.
Pig presented by Whalley Range All-stars – This 10 minute show at Cathedral Green sees a 30 foot pig in its pen snoring and snuffling completely oblivious to the fact that there is something strange happening in her tummy. Definitely one the kids will love.
Trolls Kitchen by Plunge Boom – With a hungry troll on the loose the chefs have got to come up with a suitable dinner for him to stop him causing havoc. Help them create a dinner for the troll by searching out gruesome ingredients that the troll will love, disgusting stews, putrid cakes and mouldy salads are all on the menu. This 55 minute show can be found at Cathedral Green at 12.15, 2pm and 4pm.
Dragon by Jelly Rogers – This fantastic creation is a 4 metre high dragon whih plays its own music whilst flapping its wings in time. Situated in front of Derby Cathedral between 1pm and 4pm it’s definitely worth a look.
Airquarium by Beautiful Creatures – This temporary laboratory allows festival goers the chance to study some quirky critters that have evolved as a result of the plastic polluting the seabed. This interesting and entertaining 20 minute performance can be found at Cathedral Green between 12.30pm and 4pm.
Journey on the edge of the end of the world – This 1 hour performance at Cathedral Green is not to be missed as French performing arts act ‘3 Points of suspension’ produce a comical show involving daring stunts, acrobatics and wizardry that tells a medieval tale.
