Derby Theatre

Derby Theatre, previously known as Derby Playhouse, was taken over by the University of Derby in 2009 after the Playhouse went into administration. Since then it has been used as a learning and community theatre and offers a full schedule of professional as well as amateur and student productions across the year.

 

Located within the Westfield centre (previously the Eagle centre) on theatre walk, Derby Theatre is just a 5 minute walk from the Market Place and about 10 minutes from Derby Train station. To locate Derby Theatre on a map please take a look at our Derby Map.

What’s on at Derby Theatre

The partnership between Derby University and Derby LIVE means that Derby theatre offers a full calendar of shows, concerts and theatre productions across the year.

 

Derby LIVE is responsible for providing 34 weeks of theatre each year at the venue, 12 weeks presented and 22 produced. For a further 10 weeks of the year the venue is available for hire.

Derby Theatre Seating Plan – The main auditorium of Derby theatre is a semi-circular formation of tiered seating with a 535 person capacity.

Car Parking – There are 3 main car parks close to Derby theatre so car parking is not usually a problem. The main and best car park to use is in the Westfield centre. But you can also use any of the other car parks around the city centre which are all within close walking distance of the Market Place.

Derby Guildhall Theatre

The Guildhall theatre in Derby is one of the 3 venues operated by Derby LIVE and with a capacity of 182 in the main seating area, plus a further 60 in the balcony area, is mainly used for amateur dramatic productions. In addition to this there are regular shows and concerts of folk and Jazz music, children’s events and comedy performances.

The Guildhall Theatre can be found in the Market Place in Derby opposite Derby Assembly rooms.

Derby Assembly Rooms

The largest of Derby LIVE’s 3 venues and host to a variety of Derby theatre productions, the Assembly Rooms in Derby is actually made up of 2 venues – The Great Hall and The Darwin Suite.

The Great Hall has a seating capacity of around 1200 (standing 2000), and The Darwin Suite with variable seating but a capacity of 300 maximum (standing 500).

Again, the Assembly Rooms are located in the Market Place and therefore very convenient to access by all modes of transport.
